<description>For this sponsored project with General Motors, design teams of two generated concepts for how drivers might interact with semi-autonomous cars 10-15 years in the future. The Human-Machine Interface group at GM liked this concept enough to hire both myself and my partner for summer internships dealing with a similar design problem.

After an initial survey that questioned young to middle-aged drivers about their driving experience and their relationships with their cars, this research plan was generated. Through surveys and web-based research, drivers would be grouped into three categories based on how they related to their vehicles: Car as Living Entity, Car as Extension of Self (Later changed to Car as Tool), and Car as Machine. Based on the groups' relevance to the project, a particular persona type could be researched further through techniques such as interviewing, video observation, behavioral mapping, and velcro modeling. Thanks to Daedalus Excel and thoughtform for the use of their research toolbox icons.

This system map was created to better understand the inputs and outputs associated with driving. Goals, influences, and interferences all contribute to the driver's input to the system, and thus the system's output. The output then results in feedback to which the driver reacts, once again, altering their input.

The three driver personas were further refined before choosing to pursue 'Car as a Living Entity' drivers as our primary user group. It was reasoned that as mechanical technology becomes less present in driver-car interaction and drivers' mechanical understanding of their cars lessens, and while 'intelligent' autonomous systems continue to make their way into cars, drivers will naturally gravitate towards a relationship with their cars in which they attribute qualities to them normally associated with living beings.

More to come...

<description>During an internship with General Motors in the summer of 2010, I worked on a four-person design team tasked with developing concepts for interaction between semi-autonomous vehicles and their drivers. All work shown on this page is my own. A descriptive video of the team's concept can be found here.

In our final concept, transition between autonomous and non- autonomous modes is achieved by manipulating the steering wheel. During non-autonomous mode, the driver holds and turns the steering wheel as one normally would.

To engage autonomous mode, which can only be done when the car is moving in a straight path with no obstacles ahead, the driver must first press both autonomous-mode buttons, located on the upper right and left of the steering wheel. The driver presses these buttons for 2 seconds, during which the indicators on the tops of the steering wheel's paddles begin to glow, and then blink.

The blinking blue lights indicate that the driver can now push the steering wheel backwards, 'handing' control over to the car. The wheel now splits into two separate parts. The wheel's outer ring slides back along the steering column. The central control console, which contains the airbag, remains in front of the driver.

The constant distance of the control console from the driver allows for continued use of steering wheel- mounted controls. As the car turns in autonomous mode, the wheel portion of the steering wheel turns behind its center, which does not turn.

The wheel's features include two autonomous-mode buttons on either side, Park, Confirm, and Cancel buttons, which are used in dialogue with the car during autonomous mode, standard "infotainment" buttons, and two turn paddles, which the driver uses to direct the car to make a turn not found on the current GPS route, or when no GPS route has been inputted.

In non-autonomous mode, the paddles are used to toggle turn signals on and off, and the indicators on top of the paddles indicate either the desired turn of the driver, or in autonomous mode, the upcoming turn of the car. The car's dynamic steering system, which changes the responsiveness of the steering based on the speed of the car, requires the steering wheel to turn no more than 90 degrees in either direction. This allows for a form that has less rotational symmetry than conventional full-round wheels, and can thereby provide more leg room for the driver.

The design team looked at current control surfaces on a variety of different vehicle systems. We covered a broad spectrum of interactions involving both hands and feet and looked at how they contribute to the overall control of the vehicle. When comparing them together in graphs delineating their functionality, it was important to consider their context and how it might work differently in different systems or situations.

In order to gain a better understanding of what display technologies could be used in tomorrow’s autonomous vehicles, the design team conducted a survey of display technologies at use today as well as cutting-edge and emerging technologies. Each display’s advantages and disadvantages were researched, and competing technologies, such as analog vs. digital meters, were compared. Although many emerging technologies, such as virtual retinal displays, are very promising in terms of their potential, they were not refined enough to be designed for.

The design team explored a variety of ways in which the steering wheel’s form or position could be changed. Especially promising were concepts in which the steering wheel, when in autonomous mode, afforded holding less, but remained facing the driver and at a constant distance, to insure proper function of the airbag, constant access to controls, and quick and safe transition back to non-autonomous mode, should an emergency present itself.

A concept similar to the final one was arrived upon next. A definitive problem with this concept was that the driver would have to maintain contact with both the outer portion of the wheel and buttons located on its center, while they pushed the wheel back and pulled it forward, which would be a potential problem for those with small hands. Inspired by our previous research into other driving systems, the outer portion of the wheel continued to turn in its pushed-back state as the car turned autonomously, much like the yokes on two-pilot airplanes, both of which move although only one pilot is manipulating his yoke at one time.

This concept was further developed to include turn signal and autonomous turn-activating controls and electroluminescent indicators.

These features were refined in successive iterations that made use of paddles mounted behind the steering wheel, which offered a more tactile interaction when directing the car to turn than the slide pads had in the previous iteration. The wheel’s form was changed from a yoke-style one to a full-round wheel at the request of our contacts at GM.

<description>This 6’ by 6’ by 12’ workspace was designed for a final project in Design Drawing as a freshman. My goal was to maximize a limited amount of space and turn a potentially cubical-like environment into an open-feeling one. Light from above filters through potted plants creating the feeling of working under a canopy. The second tier of the structure provides storage for volumetric objects, and the tackboard beneath it allows the designer to reference and critique 2D work. A round, modular workspace allows multiple design processes to take place around the user on one desktop.

<description>This semester-long project examined the design and construction of electric guitars, specifically a fretless electric bass. The resulting design offers several improvements from a user interface standpoint and provides a refreshing update on a dated and unevolved form.

Any musician using the standard 'finger style' method of playing needs a way to steady the right hand and support its weight. Often, a player rests the thumb on one of the instrument's pickups. Pickups were never designed to be used in this way and thus do not provide an adequate solution to the need. Because pickups are generally about a thumb's diameter wide, playing support is provided only directly above a pickup, and players are thus unable to take advantage of the full tonal range of the instrument, which changes depending on where the strings are plucked.

Some bass players, especially those who play fretless instruments, prefer the addition of a 'finger ramp,' a piece of wood placed underneath the strings that raises the height of the surface below them. A finger ramp provides the musician with support for their thumb across a wider length of the strings, and prevents the fingers from moving too far below a string after it is plucked. This allows the musician to play faster and more evenly, and improves the tone of the plucked notes. Finger ramps are almost always aftermarket or custom additions.

These needs were incorporated into the design of this bass by raising the height of the body to the height of a finger ramp. Subtractive methods were then used to create a thumb rest that provides support over the entire length of the string from bridge to fretboard.

When changing strings, each string must be threaded through a small hole in the bridge. On a typical bass bridge, these holes are located immediately above the surface of the body, making them difficult to access, and increasing the risk of scratching the instrument's painted surface as the abrasive metal strings slide over the body.

This design opens up access to the string holes and eliminates the risk of scratches by placing the bridge at the body's edge. The edge of the body is set back at this point to create a visual reference to the strings' tension "pulling" back the edge of the body.

Volume and tone knobs typically offer no indication of their current setting from 'off' to 'full.' Even knobs that have numbers on them don't have an indication of which number corresponds to the knob's setting.

These knobs use radial placement as well as increasing line length to communicate the direction of a user's desired change (+ or -), and to serve as a visual indication of a knob's current setting.

The project began with an exploration of the visual identity of several guitar companies, both large and small. This identity included their product line, website, logo, and print material.

Other electronic instruments were also examined. Many of these instruments represent the elimination of unnecessary surfaces in the design of their bodies.

The position at which the pickups are mounted determines in large part the tone that pickup will produce. These sketches explored mechanical ways in which one pickup could be moved back and forth underneath the strings to produce the desired tone, rather than blending the volumes of two separate pickups, as is necessary with conventional designs.

Before sketching body silhouettes, the important ergonomic points of several tried-and-true designs were drawn and overlaid on top of each other. These points included the right contour of the body, which rests over the player's thigh when sitting, and the two strap hooks, which determine the position and angle of the instrument relative to the player's body when standing. The resulting 'heat map' of points showed an average of all the other designs and provided a reasonable guess as to what shapes would be comfortable to play.

Another sketch exploring mechanical means of changing the pickup's position underneath the strings.

These sketches explored the possibility of displaying the electronic components usually hidden within the body of the guitar, and how they could be mounted in negative space.

These sketches explored different methods of displaying a knob's setting.

The following sketches and models explored how the shape of the body could react to the components being attached to it. Where traditional bodies are composed of flat surfaces with hardware simply screwed onto it, their forms could better reflect and emphasize the interaction between body and hardware.

Among fretless bass players, there is some disagreement between those believe the fretboard should have fret lines that show where to press down the strings (usually beginners), and those who feel that the fretboard should be blank, as it is on a classical stringed instrument, and players should use their ears to discern between notes (usually experienced players). The fretboard designs to the right explore how fret lines could be a more interesting graphic element and could represent a compromise between the two schools of thought. As one moves 'up' the neck (down in the case of these illustrations), the distance between notes decreases, thereby increasing the precision necessary to play a note in tune, and making visual markers more appropriate. A compromise is made in that the length, and therefore the visual presence of the fret lines is less where unnecessary and increases where necessary.

Exploring different headstock forms. An open headstock design (the two rightmost headstocks) was used because it offered easier access to the tuning machines from behind the headstock rather than on top of it.

These illustrations explored two different construction methods ('neck thru' and bolt-on) and how the material transition between ash and maple could be treated. Inspired by the material transitions between different sections of basketball courts, contrasting wenge laminates were used in between the neck and body to make the transition appear more attractive and intentional.

<description>One of the projects I worked on during my internship with the Human Computer Interaction Institute aimed to develop communication tools for divorced families. After identifying several categories of need from interviewing families (working around parents’ scheduling conflicts, encouraging independence in children, etc.), the design team conceptualized communication tools that were then integrated into storyboards which I illustrated. These storyboards were then presented to more families to gauge their reaction and further specify the nature of their needs. Storyboard text by Youna Averie Yang.

<description>Intel’s H.E.R.B. (Home Exploring Robotic Butler) is currently undergoing development at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute, Human Computer Interaction Institute, and Quality of Life Technology Center. HERB’s purpose is to assist the disabled and elderly with everyday tasks around their house. In the summer of 2009, I worked on an interdisciplinary team conceptualizing users’ interaction with HERB and designing housings for the robot’s exterior. All work shown is mine, unless otherwise noted.

<description>This marker organizer was designed as part of an exercise in the laser cutting process. Its form serves as an engaging piece of desktop art while presenting the markers in such a way that each color can be identified and removed easily. Its simple slip joint construction would be easy to put together for an end user and its thin parts would allow for a low profile package.

<description>This thermoformed hanging plant vessel was designed specifically for the Aloe Vera. The vessel’s top references the pointed form of the aloe leaves while the visual weight of the vessel’s bottom helps draw the viewer’s eye down the leaves towards the center of the plant, where it interacts with the vessel in an engaging way.
